Tax Protester Cindy Sheehan Exploits Son’s Death to Avoid Paying Taxes

February 24th, 2012 · 7 Comments

“Bush’s main goal is to kill as many servicemen as possible.”

- Cindy Sheehan -

“My son was killed in 2004. I am not paying my taxes for 2004. You killed my son, George Bush, and I don’t owe you a penny…you give my son back and I’ll pay my taxes. Come after me (for back taxes) and we’ll put this war on trial.”

- Cindy Sheehan -

I thought Cindy Sheehan had finally plum run out of ways to exploit the heroic death of her soldier son for personal gain, but I was apparently wrong.

CNN reports that anti-Bush activist Cindy Sheehan refuses to pay back taxes because, she says, her son died in an immoral war:

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, who is being sued in California by the federal government, said she has a duty to not pay taxes because her son died in what she called an “immoral” war.

An IRS officer, in a federal filing Tuesday in Sacramento, said Sheehan has refused to provide financial information  for the 2005 and 2006 tax years. The filing asks the court to order Sheehan to comply.

Sheehan, of Vacaville, told CNN affiliate KXTV she has not paid federal incomes taxes since 2004 — and has not disguised the fact.

“I feel like I gave my son to this country in an illegal and immoral war. I’ll never get him back,” Sheehan said. “And, so, if they can give me my son back, then I’ll pay my taxes. And that’s not going to happen.”

Sheehan drew national attention when she camped outside  then-President George W. Bush’s home in Crawford, Texas, throughout August 2005 to demand a meeting with the president over her son’s death.

Casey Sheehan, a 24-year-old Army specialist, was killed in an April  2004 battle in Baghdad. His death prompted his mother to found Gold Star Families for Peace.

First, it’s important to remember that Ms. Sheehan supported the Iraq war and it’s Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush, right up until the time her own son was killed in it. In other words, Sheehan didn’t find the war immoral when the sons and daughters of other mothers were dying for their country, but only when her own son had died for his country. If you don’t believe me, listen to what Ms. Sheehan said about the war before her son died:

He is very proud to serve for his country and to help the people of Iraq. [It is] very strong in our hearts what our country is doing for Iraq.

Second, her refusal to pay taxes on the grounds that her son died in an immoral war is insincere and merely self-serving.¹ She can prove me wrong on this count, however, by contributing an amount of money equivalent to her last seven years delinquent taxes to an anti-war organization or an organization whose mission it is to help the grieving families of lost soldiers. If she keeps the tax savings that have inured to her as a result of her son’s death, she’s every bit the hypocrite I and many others believe her to be.

I think Ms. Sheehan discovered that her son’s death was not only a good way to garner fame and national attention, but also a good way to save herself some money. The linking of her refusal to pay taxes to the fact that her adult son died in a war that he voluntarily, with her counsel and blessing, participated in, is obviously self-serving. Like all tax protesters, her purpose is not to challenge the system, but rather to save herself some jack. Everything else is ballast.

This is a truly despicable woman. No mother on the face of the planet has benefited more from their death of her own son that Ms. Sheehan has benefited from the death of hers.

Footnotes:

¹   Ms. Sheehan also told the Occupy Wall Street crowd that she refuses to pay her credit card bills because she would rather give that money to her grandchildren. When they say it’s not about the money, it’s about the money!

I don’t always agree with your viewpoints, but I’m 100% with you on this post. Cindy Sheehan’s behavior is every bit as dispicable as you say it is & I’ve even wondered if she’s come unhinged a bit.

She is what the Soviet used to fondly term the anti-nuclear activists in the West, useful idiot.

She was useful for the anti-war movement against Bush. Now that Bush is no longer the president, not so useful.

    Samina,

Sheehan is addicted to attention. When she was protesting her son’s death outside Bush’s Crawford ranch she looked giddy with excitement. Hardly grieving.

She didn’t protest the war when the sons of other mothers were dying.

    BigFire,

Nobody wants to criticize Cindy Sheehan because her son died. She has exploited peoples’ compassion like no other grieving mother I have ever seen. She’s a narcissist. It’s all about Cindy Sheehan.

Isn’t it tragic how the focus of a camera can corrupt?

I didn’t realize that Cindy Sheehan’s son was involuntarily placed into the military and sent to war completely against his will. Cindy Sheehan gave him to the military – he did not go voluntarily. If this is the case, your sons death is on your head, Ms. Sheehan. You gave your son to the military instead of giving him to a liberal university for many, many, years.

Ms. Sheehan, you are a disgrace. Especially a disgrace to your son’s honorable service.

    Bankrupted,

She talked her son into enlisting and now feels guilty because he died and in order to assuage that guilt must find a scapegoat. She needs counseling.
