Haitian Presidential Candidate Wyclef Jean Gets Hit with $2.1 Million IRS Lien

August 6th, 2010 · 2 Comments

WebCPA reports that singer and would-be Haitian President Wyclef Jean has been hit with IRS tax liens totaling $2.1 million:

The IRS filed three tax liens against Jean for his 2006, 2007 and 2008 taxes, according to The Smoking Gun website. The agency filed the first lien in 2007 for $792,269, last July for $599,167 and in May of this year for $724,332. The 37-year-old singer, who was a member of the Fugees, has paid off earlier tax liens from New Jersey and New York for smaller amounts.

Jean now plans to run for the presidency of Haiti and said he would resign as leader of his charitable foundation, Yele Haiti, which has been providing aid to the country. In February, Jean hired RSM McGladrey to help with the nonprofit’s finances after Jean faced questions over the charity’s tax returns and financial expenditures in the wake of the Haitian earthquake.

Haitians are cautioned to think twice before letting Mr. Jean handle their national finances. But if the tax cheating isn’t enough to make them punch their ballots for someone else, the following scintillatingly intelligent lyrics of his rap song If I Were President should do the trick:

If I were president all blacks would have reparations
no segregation,
feed the nation so there is no famine
Muslims, Jews and Christians
would all hold hands every week on the beach
party by the sand
word up, take trips on Air Force One
only to bring homeless with no sneaks on Air Force One
Better schools in the hood, better teachers for the classes
makin’ money, payin’ no taxes
find the best scientists
tell them “come up with an answer”
I want the cure for AIDS and Cancer
better watch my back, snipers on the hill
with the still, waitin’ JF Kill

I could throw darts at an eye chart and come up with better lyrics than that.

    Daniel,

You mean you don’t think a rap singer is qualified to run a country?
