Jim Bunning for the 2010 Profile in Courage Award

March 2nd, 2010 · No Comments

“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too….”

- Rudyard Kipling, If -

I hereby nominate Senator Jim Bunning for the 2010 Profile in Courage Award.

bunningEvery year Caroline Kennedy, on behalf of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, gives out an award in honor of her father, President John F. Kennedy, that purports to honor politicians who do courageous things. Here is the stated goal of the award:

The Profile in Courage Award seeks to make Americans aware of the conscientious and courageous acts of their public servants, and to encourage elected officials to choose principles over partisanship – to do what is right, rather than what is expedient.

The award is presented annually to a public official or officials at the federal, state or local level whose actions best demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership in the spirit of Profiles in Courage.

Right this instant, before our very eyes, Senator Jim Bunning is “doing what is right, rather than what is expedient” by filibustering the recently proposed bipartisan Senate Jobs bill:

“I believe we should pay for it. I’m trying to make a point to the people of the United States.”

And for this blasphemy, Bunning has been accused of everything short of infanticide:

Keep it up, Mr. Bunning. Even to the point of collapse, remember the words of Senator Jefferson Smith in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington:
