President Obama and his Democrat buddies spent eight years criticizing the secretiveness of the Bush administration. Now, they’ll have a chance to put up or shut up.
(CueFinal Jeopardy Theme)
The House and Senate will be meeting to attempt a reconciliation of the differences between the healthcare reform bills passed by their respective chambers.
CBS News reports that CSPAN has urged Democrats to televise the reconciliation negotiations:
As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama called for completely transparent health care deliberations and even promised to hold all negotiations on C-SPAN. Now, as the health care debate reaches its final stages, the nonprofit cable company is asking Washington leaders to follow through on that promise.
C-SPAN CEO Brian Lamb sent a letter to congressional leaders last week, asking that they “open all important negotiations, including any conference committee meetings, to electronic media coverage.”
But the Miami Herald reports that Democrats intend to conduct closed door negotiations(emphasis added):
[Representative Vern] Buchanan (R-FL) said that Democrat leaders intend to engage in closed-door negotiations that will include just a few high-ranking Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and several White House officials.
House leaders did not commit to cameras Tuesday. Asked about the letter and Obama’s pledge on the campaign trail for greater transparency Pelosi laughed and said, “there are a number of things [said] on the campaign trail.”
Hmmm. Could it be they fear that the public will see them trying to cut corrupt deals like this?
