All We are Saying is Give Entitlements a Chance

Two weeks Ken Clark of About.Com wrote a column entitled UCLA Tuition Protest Nearly Turns Into Riot in which he said:

Students enraged by a 32% increase in undergrad tuition at UCLA came together to make their concerns known. Unfortunately, this UCLA tuition protest almost turned violent, with numerous students arrested….

Now Neal McCluskey of the Cato Institute’s writes in College Students to Taxpayers: ‘Rent Now, Oppressors!’ (emphasis added):

Inside Higher Ed reports today on growing college student activism. And what are the young scholars suddenly so active about? Not unjust wars, racism, or anything else so high-minded. No, today the “no justice, no peace!” chants are all about the injustice of students being asked to pay for more of their hugely taxpayer-subsidized educations.

There’s a word for this kind of activism, and it’s not “idealism” or anything else so complimentary. It’s… “freeloading.”

Tell me something, why do we listen to 20 year olds? What could they possibly know about life after just 2 years of adulthood?

Historically, students have stumped for things that advance their own interests. For instance, they protested America’s involvement in Vietnam because they didn’t want to get drafted. And many of those who did get drafted, high-tailed it to our friendly neighbor to the North, apparently untroubled by the fact that some poor unfortunate son had to fight in their place.

What these kids need is what any child needs who has a tantrum when he doesn’t get his way: A good old-fashioned spanking.

Spare the rod, spoil the child.
