Christopher Beam of Slate reports that,
[The Obama administration] will no longer crack down on medical marijuana sellers who follow state laws….
[A] new memo written by Deputy Attorney General David Ogden urges district attorneys to defer to local marijuana laws rather than federal law, which prohibits all consumption and sales of the drug.
This raises several questions:
- Does this signal the end of the Food and Drug Administration ? All other Doctor prescribed medicines must be pre-approved by the FDA. Why is marjiuana different?
- Does this mean in the future a Doctor could legally prescribe, say, cocaine, LSD or heroin if in that Doctor’s professional medical judgment the drug would help his patient?
- Is the Obama administrations relaxed stance toward marijuana usage consistent with its proposal to tax sweet drinks and other bad foods ?
I am not a Doctor, but it’s hard for me to believe that with all of the FDA approved drugs that come out every day in this country an ounce of Jamaican Red is the way to go for a patient’s pain or anxiety management.
If this were true, wouldn’t big Pharma have already found a way to put THC in a pill form and seek FDA approval?
Perhaps the reason it hasn’t done so is because it’s the act of smoking the doobage (preferably while listening to Peter Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like I Do” for the thousandth time) that the patient wants to be allowed to do.
I mean, has anyone other than a pothead ever actually asked for a marijuana prescription? Has a Doctor ever prescribed pot for a patient who hadn’t affirmatively asked for it?
Call me cynical, but this sounds like the beginning of the total legalization of Mary Jane with other recreational drugs soon to follow.
Welcome to New Amsterdam, people.
