CNN reports that the United States Senate concluded their advice and consent role and confirmed President Obama’s appointment of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court:
Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who rose from the housing projects of the Bronx to the top of the legal profession, made history Thursday when the Senate confirmed her to become the nation’s first Hispanic Supreme Court justice.
Sotomayor, who will be the first Hispanic to sit on the Supreme Court bench, was confirmed by a 68-31 vote that included 9 Republicans and a unanimous Democratic caucus.
The 9 Republicans who voted to confirm are:
- Lamar Alexander (TN)
- Kit Bond (MO)
- Susan Collins (ME)
- Lindsay Graham (SC)
- Judd Gregg (NH)
- Dick Lugar (IN)
- Mel Martinez (FL)
- George Voinovich (OH)
- Olympia Snowe (ME)
Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) was ill and did not cast a vote.
Sotomayor will be the 111th person to sit on the high court and the third female justice. She will be sworn in on Saturday by Chief Justice John Roberts.
