Estate Tax Topsy Turvy: IRS Gives Dead People Money

June 17th, 2009 · No Comments

In a previous post I railed against the estate tax:

We Americans are a fair-minded bunch and we know a rat when we smell one. There is something oddly medieval about the idea of taking a dead man’s stuff simply because he isn’t around to fight you for it any longer.

If it walks like grave-robbing and quacks like grave-robbing, guess what?

It’s a duck.

Maybe I spoke too soon.

The government it seems is trying to be fair minded. It has taken money from dead people through the estate tax and now, according to Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), it is giving some of it back

Whoever said you can’t take your money with you when you die clearly never anticipated the stimulus. Millions of Americans on Social Security are receiving $250 from Uncle Sam, including dead people. The Social Security Administration (SSA) blames a strict mid-June deadline for mailing out 10,000 checks to deceased persons.

When it’s my time to shuffle off this mortal coil I think I’ll have my mortician carve one of those little piggy-bank slits in my casket.

Just in case there’s another stimulus bill.
