I haven’t seen vetting like this since the San Diego Chargers crackerjack draft evaluation committee made Ryan Leaf the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL draft.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Ron Kirk, Obama’s choice for U.S. Trade Representative, has a tax problem.
As did Obama’s choice for Treasury, Timothy Geithner, Health and Human Services, Tom Daschle, and his 2008 campaign manager, Marty Nesbitt:
The Senate Finance Committee says [Kirk] underpaid by $9,975 in the last three years.
Senate aides uncovered the shortfall during weeks of vetting, and Kirk – the administration’s designated point person on trade – has promised to pay the Internal Revenue Service in full.
The problems: Kirk deducted too much for season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks and too much for tax preparation fees, and failed to report as income speaking fees that he donated to his alma mater, Austin College.
If this were “W”, the calls for impeachment would have already begun.
Almost makes you pine for the days of the “axis of evil”, “strategery and “yellow cake.”
