“Who does your taxes?
The internet is an egalitarian’s paradise. It has leveled the playing field for professionals of all stripes by allowing the “little guy” to compete on an equal footing with the big boys. Mostly this is accomplished through blogging.
I have been tracking tax blogs for several years and have discovered for myself that there is nothing “equal” about them. Many suck, most are mediocre, only a select few are excellent.
Below are my five favorite tax blogs. The winners will receive an autographed DVD version of the movie Ghostbusters featuring the line “who does your taxes” spoken by gatekeeper/accountant Louis Tully (played by Rick Moranis).
TaxProf Blog – Professor Paul L. Caron’s site is not only the best tax blog out there its the most pinged, too.
Tax law is ever changing and there seems to be a never ending stream of new court rulings, new IRS releases and announcements and new tax planning techniques. Professor Caron blogs every day and sometimes several times a day which is necessary to keep up with all things taxation. There seems to be nothing in the taxosphere that escapes him. He scoops us all.
Quite frankly, it’s starting to tick me off.
Roth & Company, P.C. (TaxUpdateBlog) – This is a terrific CPA firm blog. The firm is located in Des Moines, Iowa so I don’t have to worry about losing too many clients to it (just kidding). Daily posts, cutting edge commentary and a great sense of humor make Joe Kristan’s blog standout.
Don’t Mess With Taxes - Austin Texas Journalist Kay Bell doesn’t post as frequently as Paul Caron and Joe Kirstan, but her posts are witty, topical and informative. Her site loads a little slowly probably because it’s so busy with images and advertisements, but it’s worth the wait. I particularly like the “important dates” calendar she runs on her right sidebar.
Kay, keep on keeping Uncle Sam cranky.
Tax Tips Blog- Another CPA blog. This one from Gina Gwozdz of Bullard, Texas. This is a nuts and bolts site that answers basic tax questions the average taxpayer might have. Gina has a conversational writing style that is perfect for blogging and she posts regularly. The downside of her site for me is that it’s a little too much of a sales pitch. Tone that down, Gina, and you have a real doozy.
It didn’t hurt Gina any that she’s kinda cute in a Sally Fieldish sort of way.
TaxVox Blog - This is a tax policy site that is published by the Tax Policy Center, a joint venture of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution. I like it for its coverage of the tax proposals of McCain and Obama and it’s efforts (it doesn’t always succeed) to stay apolitical.
Well, there it is, my fave five (maybe I shoulda put Charles Barkley in there?).
I’d love to hear your comments.
What do you think of the list? What tax blogs do you like?

Robert, thanks for the input. I’m going to add wanderingtaxpro and taxgirl to my watch list. Nice blogs.
By the way, I got a kick out of your headline “Whats the buzz, tell me whats happening.” Maybe someday I’ll write a companion post titled “Hang on Lord we’re gonna fight for you.”
